Roadshow;
Points to Latest Encouraging Trend in Philippine Tourism
The
official with one of the toughest jobs in the Arroyo
administration’s Cabinet, Tourism Secretary Richard J.
Gordon pointed to the latest encouraging trend of tourism in
the Philippines.
The
first part of the all-out tourism campaign covers nine cities
in the United States and Canada to reach out to the estimated
2.3 to 3 million Filipino-Americans who can influence
potential visitors to the Philippines for VP2003 and beyond.
The North American market is the Philippines’ premier source
of tourists, representing 25% of the country’s total visitor
arrivals in 2001. American tourists are long-staying, use and
spend more on local tourism facilities and services such as
accommodations, tours, dining, shopping, recreation and
entertainment.
Gordon’s high regard and respect for volunteerism was
exemplified during his term as Mayor of Olongapo City where he
successfully mobilized volunteers to help run the local
government. As Chair of the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA),
he again inspired an army of 8,000 volunteers to protect and
preserve the US$ 8 billion facility; and spearheaded its
transformation into the country’s premier investment hub.
